They can also be called supra or extra-numerary breasts. All of us, while fetuses in the womb, develop “breasts” which lie along a line that extends from the armpit to the inguinal region, known as the mammary line. In most people, this line disappears leaving only 2 breasts located in front of the chest. But if this line does not disappear completely, it may give place to breasts or nipples in other parts of the body, which we call accessory breasts.

 

 

 

1. What type of anesthesia is needed for the removal of accessory breasts?
     Only local anesthesia for unilateral or small breasts. Local anesthesia with sedation for broader cases.

2. Where are accessory breasts most common?
     In the underarm region, but they may be present throughout the breast line.

3. What are the scars?
     Scars vary in size depending on the size and location of the size and location of the extra-numerary breast. In most cases, a scar from 4 to 7 cm is left in the underarm region.

4. Is the surgery very painful?
     No. We prescribe over the counter painkillers that will be taken prophylactically in the early days, that is, before the pain or discomfort appear.

5. Does the incision get very swollen and purple?
     In the first 5 days, edema (swelling) and ecchymosis (purple) may be present. But, this will depend on how each patient responds to surgery.

6. When will the stitches be removed?
     For this type of surgery we use absorbable sutures, that is, wires that are degraded by the body after a few weeks. Thus, the stitches do not need to be removed, they will disappear by themselves.
